Family:Cichlids (Cichlidae)

Other scientific names: Chaetodon caris, Chaetodon suratensis, Etroplus meleagris

The scientific name for this cichlid species is Etroplus suratensis, but it is commonly known as the Banded Chromide or Green Chromide. Due to its significant size and rather subdued coloration, this species has not become one of the most popular among aquarists. Nevertheless, its unique ability to adapt to both fresh and brackish, almost marine, water makes it of particular interest.

Frequently asked questions

The essentials: size, tank volume, water parameters and care

How big does Green Chromide get?

An adult reaches 25–35 cm in length. Plan the tank around the maximum size: the fish quickly outgrows a cramped setup.

What size aquarium does Green Chromide need?

The minimum recommended volume is 500 L. A smaller tank speeds up nitrate build-up and raises stress levels.

What water parameters does Green Chromide need?

Temperature 20–30 °C, pH 7–9.5, hardness 10–21 dGH. Stability matters more than exact values: sudden swings are harder on the fish than a small deviation from the ideal.

How long does Green Chromide live?

Around 8 years when kept properly. Lifespan depends directly on tank volume, water quality and a varied diet.

Is Green Chromide aggressive?

Temperament: peaceful (regular). Keep this in mind when choosing tank mates.

How many Green Chromide should be kept together?

Recommended setup: group (8–10 individuals). Ignoring this is a common cause of stress and disease.

What does Green Chromide eat?

Diet type: mixed diet (meat + plant-based). Feed small portions that are finished within a couple of minutes — overfeeding does more harm than underfeeding.

What is the scientific name of Green Chromide?

The scientific name of the species is Etroplus suratensis, family Cichlids (Cichlidae). It also appears in the literature as: Chaetodon caris, Chaetodon suratensis, Etroplus meleagris.
