Family:Erethistidae

The Banded Catfish, also known by its scientific name Caelatoglanis zonatus, is a member of the family Erethistidae (Sisorid Catfishes). This fish is quite rare among amateur aquarists. Most of the specimens offered for sale usually enter aquariums after being caught from the wild. It should be noted that exported individuals may have difficulty acclimatizing and initially refuse commercial foods. Due to these characteristics, this species is not recommended for beginners in aquarism.

Frequently asked questions

The essentials: size, tank volume, water parameters and care

How big does Chiselmouth Catfish get?

An adult reaches 4 cm in length. Plan the tank around the maximum size: the fish quickly outgrows a cramped setup.

What size aquarium does Chiselmouth Catfish need?

The minimum recommended volume is 60 L. A smaller tank speeds up nitrate build-up and raises stress levels.

What water parameters does Chiselmouth Catfish need?

Temperature 22–28 °C, pH 6.5–7.5, hardness 5–15 dGH. Stability matters more than exact values: sudden swings are harder on the fish than a small deviation from the ideal.

How long does Chiselmouth Catfish live?

Around 3 years when kept properly. Lifespan depends directly on tank volume, water quality and a varied diet.

Is Chiselmouth Catfish aggressive?

Temperament: peaceful (regular). Keep this in mind when choosing tank mates.

How many Chiselmouth Catfish should be kept together?

Recommended setup: large group (10+ individuals). Ignoring this is a common cause of stress and disease.

What does Chiselmouth Catfish eat?

Diet type: sinking (meat / protein). Feed small portions that are finished within a couple of minutes — overfeeding does more harm than underfeeding.

What is the scientific name of Chiselmouth Catfish?

The scientific name of the species is Caelatoglanis zonatus, family Erethistidae.
