Frequently asked questions

The essentials: size, tank volume, water parameters and care

How big does Reddish Mystus Catfish get?

An adult reaches 15–19 cm in length. Plan the tank around the maximum size: the fish quickly outgrows a cramped setup.

What size aquarium does Reddish Mystus Catfish need?

The minimum recommended volume is 250 L. A smaller tank speeds up nitrate build-up and raises stress levels.

What water parameters does Reddish Mystus Catfish need?

Temperature 20–26 °C, pH 6–7, hardness 5–19 dGH. Stability matters more than exact values: sudden swings are harder on the fish than a small deviation from the ideal.

How long does Reddish Mystus Catfish live?

Around 8 years when kept properly. Lifespan depends directly on tank volume, water quality and a varied diet.

Is Reddish Mystus Catfish aggressive?

Temperament: semi-peaceful (dangerous to smaller ones). Keep this in mind when choosing tank mates.

How many Reddish Mystus Catfish should be kept together?

Recommended setup: small group (3–4 individuals). Ignoring this is a common cause of stress and disease.

What does Reddish Mystus Catfish eat?

Diet type: meat with plant additives (omnivores). Feed small portions that are finished within a couple of minutes — overfeeding does more harm than underfeeding.

What is the scientific name of Reddish Mystus Catfish?

The scientific name of the species is Mystus nigriceps, family Bagridae (naked catfishes). It also appears in the literature as: Bagrus micracanthus, Bagrus nigriceps, Hypselobagrus micracanthus.
