The Lyretail Crenicara, also known by its scientific name Dicrossus filamentosus or commonly as the Chessboard Cichlid, is a member of the family Cichlidae. It is sometimes also referred to as the “Checkerboard” Cichlid. This fish attracts attention with its bright appearance and peaceful disposition. Frequently asked questions

The essentials: size, tank volume, water parameters and care

How big does Chessboard Cichlid get?

An adult reaches 3–4 cm in length. Plan the tank around the maximum size: the fish quickly outgrows a cramped setup.

What size aquarium does Chessboard Cichlid need?

The minimum recommended volume is 60 L. A smaller tank speeds up nitrate build-up and raises stress levels.

What water parameters does Chessboard Cichlid need?

Temperature 27–30 °C, pH 4.5–5.8, hardness 1–5 dGH. Stability matters more than exact values: sudden swings are harder on the fish than a small deviation from the ideal.

How long does Chessboard Cichlid live?

Around 4 years when kept properly. Lifespan depends directly on tank volume, water quality and a varied diet.

Is Chessboard Cichlid aggressive?

Temperament: peaceful (regular). Keep this in mind when choosing tank mates.

How many Chessboard Cichlid should be kept together?

Recommended setup: schooling (usually from 5–6 individuals and more). Ignoring this is a common cause of stress and disease.

What does Chessboard Cichlid eat?

Diet type: any (universal). Feed small portions that are finished within a couple of minutes — overfeeding does more harm than underfeeding.

What is the scientific name of Chessboard Cichlid?

The scientific name of the species is Dicrossus filamentosus, family Cichlids (Cichlidae). It also appears in the literature as: Crenicara filamentosa.
