These fish reach only 1.5 cm in length, making them among the most miniature aquarium inhabitants. Perhaps their size is their main distinguishing feature. Their coloration is rather inconspicuous – gray and translucent, allowing the spine to be seen through the body. Sexual dimorphism is weakly expressed, making it quite difficult to distinguish males from females.
Habitat
Its natural habitat is in Southeast Asia, in the extensive Mekong River basin, which stretches across northwestern Thailand. In nature, these fish prefer shallow bodies of water with clear water, such as swamps, river floodplains, flooded areas of tropical forests, and are also found in agricultural areas, such as rice paddies.
Behavior and Compatibility
This is a peaceful and calm fish that coexists well with other species of comparable size. It should be kept in a school of at least 8–10 individuals, as the larger the group, the more comfortable they feel. When kept alone, the fish may become timid and tend to hide in shelters.

Such an aquarium usually has a volume of 10–15 liters and is equipped with a heater, as well as a simple air-driven sponge filter. Lighting is not essential for it. Unpretentious shade-loving plants or ferns can be used as decor. The incubation period lasts approximately 2 days, and after another 24 hours, the fry begin to swim independently in search of food. Despite the apparent simplicity of breeding, feeding the fry can be a challenge due to their tiny size. At the first stage, paramecia will serve as ideal food. After about 10 days, the juveniles grow enough to transition to Artemia nauplii or other small foods.

Cottelata brittani is a hardy and undemanding fish. When suitable keeping conditions are met, health problems usually do not arise.
