Family:Moray Eels (Muraenidae)

Other scientific names: Gymnothorax borneensis, Lycodontis literata, Lycodontis tile, Muraena gracilis, Muraena tile, Muraena vermiculata

The scientific name Gymnothorax tile belongs to the Muraenidae family. This species is known as the freshwater or Indian mud moray eel. This exotic fish, although often considered an inhabitant of marine aquariums, is not a truly freshwater species. It requires brackish water for comfortable existence. Due to a number of difficulties in keeping them, these moray eels are not recommended for beginner aquarists, especially those planning to care for an aquarium independently.

Frequently asked questions

The essentials: size, tank volume, water parameters and care

How big does Freshwater Moray Eel get?

An adult reaches 40–60 cm in length. Plan the tank around the maximum size: the fish quickly outgrows a cramped setup.

What size aquarium does Freshwater Moray Eel need?

The minimum recommended volume is 400 L. A smaller tank speeds up nitrate build-up and raises stress levels.

What water parameters does Freshwater Moray Eel need?

Temperature 20–28 °C, pH 7.5–9, hardness 10–31 dGH. Stability matters more than exact values: sudden swings are harder on the fish than a small deviation from the ideal.

How long does Freshwater Moray Eel live?

Around 15 years when kept properly. Lifespan depends directly on tank volume, water quality and a varied diet.

Is Freshwater Moray Eel aggressive?

Temperament: semi-peaceful (including aggression during spawning / intraspecific conflicts). This is a predatory species — any fish small enough to fit in its mouth will eventually be eaten.

How many Freshwater Moray Eel should be kept together?

Recommended setup: both solitary and in group (flexible). Ignoring this is a common cause of stress and disease.

What does Freshwater Moray Eel eat?

Diet type: for carnivores (live fish, insects, etc.). Feed small portions that are finished within a couple of minutes — overfeeding does more harm than underfeeding.

What is the scientific name of Freshwater Moray Eel?

The scientific name of the species is Gymnothorax tile, family Moray Eels (Muraenidae). It also appears in the literature as: Gymnothorax borneensis, Lycodontis literata, Lycodontis tile.
