Peckoltia sp. L288, more commonly known as Peckolt's Pleco, belongs to the family Loricariidae, or armored catfish. This fish was named in honor of Gustav Peckolt, a German botanist and pharmacist who, in the late 19th century, published one of the first books dedicated to the flora and fauna of the Amazon. The exact scientific classification of this catfish has not yet been established, which explains the alphanumeric designation in its name. It is quite rare in amateur aquaristics.

Frequently asked questions

The essentials: size, tank volume, water parameters and care

How big does Peckolt's Pleco get?

An adult reaches 9–10 cm in length. Plan the tank around the maximum size: the fish quickly outgrows a cramped setup.

What size aquarium does Peckolt's Pleco need?

The minimum recommended volume is 80 L. A smaller tank speeds up nitrate build-up and raises stress levels.

What water parameters does Peckolt's Pleco need?

Temperature 26–30 °C, pH 5–7, hardness 1–10 dGH. Stability matters more than exact values: sudden swings are harder on the fish than a small deviation from the ideal.

How long does Peckolt's Pleco live?

Around 8 years when kept properly. Lifespan depends directly on tank volume, water quality and a varied diet.

Is Peckolt's Pleco aggressive?

Temperament: peaceful (regular). Keep this in mind when choosing tank mates.

How many Peckolt's Pleco should be kept together?

Recommended setup: both solitary and in group (flexible). Ignoring this is a common cause of stress and disease.

What does Peckolt's Pleco eat?

Diet type: sinking (plant-based). Feed small portions that are finished within a couple of minutes — overfeeding does more harm than underfeeding.

What is the scientific name of Peckolt's Pleco?

The scientific name of the species is Peckoltia vittata, family Armored Catfishes (Loricariidae). It also appears in the literature as: Ancistrus vittatus, Chaetostomus vittatus, Peckoltia kuhlmanni.
