The marbled talking catfish, known scientifically as Amblydoras nauticus, is a member of the family Doradidae, or thorny catfishes. This species is attractive due to its unpretentiousness and ease of keeping. It coexists readily with a large number of other fish, even aggressive ones, provided they are not too large. The only characteristic to consider is its nocturnal lifestyle, which causes the catfish to prefer staying in hiding during the day.

Frequently asked questions

The essentials: size, tank volume, water parameters and care

How big does Marbled Catfish get?

An adult reaches 7 cm in length. Plan the tank around the maximum size: the fish quickly outgrows a cramped setup.

What size aquarium does Marbled Catfish need?

The minimum recommended volume is 50 L. A smaller tank speeds up nitrate build-up and raises stress levels.

What water parameters does Marbled Catfish need?

Temperature 23–28 °C, pH 5.5–7.5, hardness 2–21 dGH. Stability matters more than exact values: sudden swings are harder on the fish than a small deviation from the ideal.

How long does Marbled Catfish live?

Around 10 years when kept properly. Lifespan depends directly on tank volume, water quality and a varied diet.

Is Marbled Catfish aggressive?

Temperament: peaceful (regular). Keep this in mind when choosing tank mates.

How many Marbled Catfish should be kept together?

Recommended setup: small group (3–4 individuals). Ignoring this is a common cause of stress and disease.

What does Marbled Catfish eat?

Diet type: sinking (any). Feed small portions that are finished within a couple of minutes — overfeeding does more harm than underfeeding.

What is the scientific name of Marbled Catfish?

The scientific name of the species is Amblydoras nauticus, family Doradidae (Thorny Catfishes). It also appears in the literature as: Anadoras nauticus, Zathorax nauticus.
