Aulonocara freibergi, also known as the Malawi Butterfly or Fairy Cichlid, is scientifically classified as Aulonocara jacobfreibergi and belongs to the family Cichlidae. This species is endemic to the mountainous Lake Malawi in East Africa. Its primary habitat is the southern part of the lake, where sandy bottom areas alternate with rocky formations along the shores. Frequently asked questions

The essentials: size, tank volume, water parameters and care

How big does Malawi Butterfly get?

An adult reaches 9–12 cm in length. Plan the tank around the maximum size: the fish quickly outgrows a cramped setup.

What size aquarium does Malawi Butterfly need?

The minimum recommended volume is 200 L. A smaller tank speeds up nitrate build-up and raises stress levels.

What water parameters does Malawi Butterfly need?

Temperature 25–29 °C, pH 7.6–9, hardness 10–25 dGH. Stability matters more than exact values: sudden swings are harder on the fish than a small deviation from the ideal.

How long does Malawi Butterfly live?

Around 8 years when kept properly. Lifespan depends directly on tank volume, water quality and a varied diet.

Is Malawi Butterfly aggressive?

Temperament: semi-peaceful (including aggression during spawning / intraspecific conflicts). Keep this in mind when choosing tank mates.

How many Malawi Butterfly should be kept together?

Recommended setup: harem (1 male and several females). Ignoring this is a common cause of stress and disease.

What does Malawi Butterfly eat?

Diet type: mixed diet (meat + plant-based). Feed small portions that are finished within a couple of minutes — overfeeding does more harm than underfeeding.

What is the scientific name of Malawi Butterfly?

The scientific name of the species is Aulonocara jacobfreibergi, family Cichlids (Cichlidae). It also appears in the literature as: Trematocranus jacobfreibergi.
