Family:Armored or Callichthyid Catfish (Callichthyidae)

Cope's Corydoras, scientifically known as Corydoras copei, belongs to the extensive armored catfish family (Callichthyidae). This species was named in honor of the American ichthyologist Edward Drinker Cope, who lived from 1840 to 1897. This catfish is rarely available for sale. It should be noted that individuals offered on the aquarium market are often wild-caught from natural waters, which imposes certain conditions on their subsequent keeping.

Frequently asked questions

The essentials: size, tank volume, water parameters and care

How big does Cope's Corydoras get?

An adult reaches 4–5 cm in length. Plan the tank around the maximum size: the fish quickly outgrows a cramped setup.

What size aquarium does Cope's Corydoras need?

The minimum recommended volume is 70 L. A smaller tank speeds up nitrate build-up and raises stress levels.

What water parameters does Cope's Corydoras need?

Temperature 20–26 °C, pH 5–7, hardness 2–10 dGH. Stability matters more than exact values: sudden swings are harder on the fish than a small deviation from the ideal.

How long does Cope's Corydoras live?

Around 4 years when kept properly. Lifespan depends directly on tank volume, water quality and a varied diet.

Is Cope's Corydoras aggressive?

Temperament: peaceful (regular). Keep this in mind when choosing tank mates.

How many Cope's Corydoras should be kept together?

Recommended setup: small group (5–6 individuals). Ignoring this is a common cause of stress and disease.

What does Cope's Corydoras eat?

Diet type: sinking (any). Feed small portions that are finished within a couple of minutes — overfeeding does more harm than underfeeding.

What is the scientific name of Cope's Corydoras?

The scientific name of the species is Corydoras copei, family Armored or Callichthyid Catfish (Callichthyidae).
