Family:Armored or Callichthyid Catfish (Callichthyidae)

Corydoras kanei is a member of the armored catfish family, Callichthyidae. The fish is named after Kane Grant, the son of the scientist who first discovered and described this species. The unique discovery of this catfish took place in 1998, when it was found in the vast Rio Negro basin in South America. Intriguingly, two researchers independently found this species and assigned it the identifiers C026 and C046. It was only in 2011 that Grant established that these identifiers referred to the same species.

Frequently asked questions

The essentials: size, tank volume, water parameters and care

How big does Corydoras kanei get?

An adult reaches 4–5 cm in length. Plan the tank around the maximum size: the fish quickly outgrows a cramped setup.

What size aquarium does Corydoras kanei need?

The minimum recommended volume is 80 L. A smaller tank speeds up nitrate build-up and raises stress levels.

What water parameters does Corydoras kanei need?

Temperature 20–26 °C, pH 5.5–7.5, hardness 2–10 dGH. Stability matters more than exact values: sudden swings are harder on the fish than a small deviation from the ideal.

How long does Corydoras kanei live?

Around 5 years when kept properly. Lifespan depends directly on tank volume, water quality and a varied diet.

Is Corydoras kanei aggressive?

Temperament: peaceful (regular). Keep this in mind when choosing tank mates.

How many Corydoras kanei should be kept together?

Recommended setup: small group (5–6 individuals). Ignoring this is a common cause of stress and disease.

What does Corydoras kanei eat?

Diet type: sinking (any). Feed small portions that are finished within a couple of minutes — overfeeding does more harm than underfeeding.

What is the scientific name of Corydoras kanei?

The scientific name of the species is Corydoras kanei, family Armored or Callichthyid Catfish (Callichthyidae).
