Family:Callichthyidae

Corydoras adolfoi, also known as Adolfo's Corydoras, belongs to the family Callichthyidae. It was named after Adolfo Schwarz, an exporter of South American fish, who played a key role in popularizing this species among aquarists. This catfish inhabits a rather limited region in the Rio Negro basin, within the Brazilian municipality of São Gabriel da Cachoeira. Its natural habitat, in this pristine equatorial part of the Amazon, is characterized by low pH and low carbonate hardness. Due to the abundance of organic material such as fallen leaves, branches, and riparian vegetation, the water in these areas is rich in tannins and organic acids, giving it a deep brown, 'tea-like' hue.

Frequently asked questions

The essentials: size, tank volume, water parameters and care

How big does Adolfo's Corydoras get?

An adult reaches 6 cm in length. Plan the tank around the maximum size: the fish quickly outgrows a cramped setup.

What size aquarium does Adolfo's Corydoras need?

The minimum recommended volume is 70 L. A smaller tank speeds up nitrate build-up and raises stress levels.

What water parameters does Adolfo's Corydoras need?

Temperature 20–26 °C, pH 4–7, hardness 1–5 dGH. Stability matters more than exact values: sudden swings are harder on the fish than a small deviation from the ideal.

How long does Adolfo's Corydoras live?

Around 5 years when kept properly. Lifespan depends directly on tank volume, water quality and a varied diet.

Is Adolfo's Corydoras aggressive?

Temperament: peaceful (regular). Keep this in mind when choosing tank mates.

How many Adolfo's Corydoras should be kept together?

Recommended setup: small group (5–6 individuals). Ignoring this is a common cause of stress and disease.

What does Adolfo's Corydoras eat?

Diet type: sinking (any). Feed small portions that are finished within a couple of minutes — overfeeding does more harm than underfeeding.

What is the scientific name of Adolfo's Corydoras?

The scientific name of the species is Corydoras adolfoi, family Callichthyidae.
