Microphis lineatus, known as the Banded Pipefish, belongs to the family Syngnathiformes. This species inhabits the coastal tropical waters of the American continent. It can be found in fresh, brackish, and marine waters along the coastline, extending from the southern regions of the USA (Florida) and Mexico to Brazil, as well as throughout the extensive Caribbean basin. A characteristic habitat for these fish is dense thickets of Sargassum seaweed.

Frequently asked questions

The essentials: size, tank volume, water parameters and care

How big does Banded Pipefish get?

An adult reaches 20 cm in length. Plan the tank around the maximum size: the fish quickly outgrows a cramped setup.

What size aquarium does Banded Pipefish need?

The minimum recommended volume is 250 L. A smaller tank speeds up nitrate build-up and raises stress levels.

What water parameters does Banded Pipefish need?

Temperature 23–28 °C, pH 6–8, hardness 15–30 dGH. Stability matters more than exact values: sudden swings are harder on the fish than a small deviation from the ideal.

How long does Banded Pipefish live?

Around 5 years when kept properly. Lifespan depends directly on tank volume, water quality and a varied diet.

Is Banded Pipefish aggressive?

Temperament: peaceful (regular). Keep this in mind when choosing tank mates.

How many Banded Pipefish should be kept together?

Recommended setup: small group (3–4 individuals). Ignoring this is a common cause of stress and disease.

What does Banded Pipefish eat?

Diet type: meat / protein (live, frozen, fresh). Feed small portions that are finished within a couple of minutes — overfeeding does more harm than underfeeding.

What is the scientific name of Banded Pipefish?

The scientific name of the species is Microphis lineatus, family Pipefishes (Syngnathidae). It also appears in the literature as: Doryichthys lineatus, Doryrhamphus sierra, Microphis brachyurus.
