A representative of the carp family (Cyprinidae), the Chalakkudi Barb, known scientifically as Sahyadria chalakkudiensis, only appeared in aquaristics in 2001, making it a relatively new species for hobbyists. It received its name from the Chalakudy River in the Indian state of Kerala, where it was first discovered. Keeping this species is considered not very difficult, however, its breeding poses certain challenges, and the choice of tank mates should be approached with particular care.

Frequently asked questions

The essentials: size, tank volume, water parameters and care

How big does Chalakkudi Barb get?

An adult reaches 10–12 cm in length. Plan the tank around the maximum size: the fish quickly outgrows a cramped setup.

What size aquarium does Chalakkudi Barb need?

The minimum recommended volume is 200 L. A smaller tank speeds up nitrate build-up and raises stress levels.

What water parameters does Chalakkudi Barb need?

Temperature 15–25 °C, pH 6.5–7.5, hardness 5–21 dGH. Stability matters more than exact values: sudden swings are harder on the fish than a small deviation from the ideal.

How long does Chalakkudi Barb live?

Around 4 years when kept properly. Lifespan depends directly on tank volume, water quality and a varied diet.

Is Chalakkudi Barb aggressive?

Temperament: semi-peaceful (including aggression during spawning / intraspecific conflicts). Keep this in mind when choosing tank mates.

How many Chalakkudi Barb should be kept together?

Recommended setup: medium group (6–8 individuals). Ignoring this is a common cause of stress and disease.

What does Chalakkudi Barb eat?

Diet type: any (universal). Feed small portions that are finished within a couple of minutes — overfeeding does more harm than underfeeding.

What is the scientific name of Chalakkudi Barb?

The scientific name of the species is Sahyadria chalakkudiensis, family Cyprinids (Cyprinidae). It also appears in the literature as: Dawkinsia chalakkudiensis, Puntius chalakkudiensis, Puntius chalakudaiensis.
