Other scientific names: Apistogramma ornatipinnis, Apistogramma wickleri, Heterogramma steindachneri

The fish, known by the scientific name Apistogramma steindachneri, belongs to the family Cichlidae. It was named Steindachner's Apistogramma in honor of Franz Steindachner, an Austrian zoologist. Since its first description in 1908, this species has changed its name three times as the genus Apistogramma was studied in more depth. Due to certain behavioral characteristics and the requirement for a rather narrow range of water conditions, its keeping can be moderately challenging. Therefore, it is recommended for aquarists with appropriate experience.

Frequently asked questions

The essentials: size, tank volume, water parameters and care

How big does Steindachner's Apistogramma get?

An adult reaches 5–8 cm in length. Plan the tank around the maximum size: the fish quickly outgrows a cramped setup.

What size aquarium does Steindachner's Apistogramma need?

The minimum recommended volume is 80 L. A smaller tank speeds up nitrate build-up and raises stress levels.

What water parameters does Steindachner's Apistogramma need?

Temperature 20–25 °C, pH 4–7.5, hardness 0–10 dGH. Stability matters more than exact values: sudden swings are harder on the fish than a small deviation from the ideal.

How long does Steindachner's Apistogramma live?

Around 5 years when kept properly. Lifespan depends directly on tank volume, water quality and a varied diet.

Is Steindachner's Apistogramma aggressive?

Temperament: aggressive / incompatible / unfriendly. Keep this in mind when choosing tank mates.

How many Steindachner's Apistogramma should be kept together?

Recommended setup: harem (1 male and several females). Ignoring this is a common cause of stress and disease.

What does Steindachner's Apistogramma eat?

Diet type: any (universal). Feed small portions that are finished within a couple of minutes — overfeeding does more harm than underfeeding.

What is the scientific name of Steindachner's Apistogramma?

The scientific name of the species is Apistogramma steindachneri, family Cichlids (Cichlidae). It also appears in the literature as: Apistogramma ornatipinnis, Apistogramma wickleri, Heterogramma steindachneri.
